Pops and Coach D at the 25th Annual Athens Triathlon

March 6, 2010

This was the last outing that my dad and I had when he first started his fight against Osteosarcoma. My dad, also known as Pops to me in the last couple of years of his life, went to be with my mom and his savior, Jesus Christ, yesterday April 6, 2011.

Pops was a great father, protector, mentor and friend. He always worked with his hands whether it be as a mess hall cook on a supply ship in the Navy during the start of the Vietnam war conflict, as a butcher, photographer, grade A machinist or in his later years as a caregiver to my mom. Most of all, he loved and provided for his family always. He loved to hunt, guns, photography, motorcycles and anything mechanic. He was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1982. Through years of struggling with chemo, a bone marrow transplant and various other treatments, he very seldom missed work, and never stopped providing for us. He could commonly be found on the back of his Harley, BMW, Honda or Yamaha motorcycle on his way to chemo and then off to work second shift at Bell Helicopter. Most people don't know this, but Pops was my step-father. He raised me and my two wonderful sisters Angela and Delana. So, in our eyes, he was our dad!

In the late winter of last year, he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. He underwent a total hip replacement, radiation and then other treatments. During all of his battles, he also cared for my mother who passed away November 12, 2010. No matter what came his way, he always thought about our mother and his children first. He was a great example to me and all around him on how Godly male character should be emulated. In the most recent days, cancer treatment and the progression of the disease had required his hospitalization. He fought on a daily basis to insure that he had all of his affairs taken care of and that we were not burdened by his declining health. I attribute any of the good traits that I have to my mom and my dad. He taught me how to start a job and finish it right. He always supported me in all of my endeavors. He will be greatly missed, but I hope that I and my children can live our lives to carry on his legacy of sacrifice and giving to others. He is survived by his sister Gail Scott, daughters Angela Gann, Delana Knupp, daughter in law Michele Deaton, grandsons Miles, Owen, Samuel, Micah Knupp, Devin, Ian Gann and grand daughters Megan, Madeleane, and Meredith Deaton.

Yesterday, was a sad but joyous day! Pops, I'll see you at the shooting range, on the back of our bikes, or in the field hunting together on the other side....

Love your son,
Darin
